Bedtime Joy
March 7, 2010 in Mommy Musings
Like most new parents, we have had our share of sleepless nights. No matter what hour of night, I sing the same song to Josiah. It is the same song my mom sang to me when I was a baby. I guess it was written my Randy Sparks, but was made popular by John Denver in the 1970s.
I don’t actually sing all the words (for a long time I didn’t even know them). I have looked up the parts I didn’t know, but they don’t make sense to me: What is a dandy? A rover? What does it mean to lie in your clover? I just stick with “da da da” at those parts. Josiah doesn’t mind. In all reality, it is only the tune that is for him anyway; the words are for me.
Here is the song, sung by John Denver (the video really shows its age):
Here are the lyrics as I sing them:
Today while the blossom still clings to the vine,
I’ll taste your strawberries, I’ll drink your sweet wine.
A million tomorrows shall all pass away
If ever I forget all the joys that are mine today
-
la da da da daaa da daaa da da da daaa
You’ll know who I am by the song that I sing
la da da da daaaa da daaa da da da daaa
Who knows what tomorrow may bring?
-
Today while the blossom still clings to the vine
I’ll taste your strawberries, I’ll drink your sweet wine.
A million tomorrows shall all pass away
If ever I forget all the joys that are mine today
-
I can’t be contented with yesterday’s glories
I can’t live on promises winter to spring
Now is my moment and this is my story
We’ll laugh and we’ll cry and we’ll sing…
-
Today while the blossom still clings to the vine
I’ll taste your strawberries, I’ll drink your sweet wine
A million tomorrows shall all pass away
If ever I forget all the joys that are mine today

This song reminds me to live in the moment and to cherish it. It is easy to wish life away; to say “I can’t wait until he sleeps through the night” or “I can’t wait until he can just tell me what is the matter.” But already I am so aware of just how fast time goes and how quickly he grows. I will never have my tiny baby back!
A million tomorrows will all pass away, if ever I forget all the joy that is mine TODAY!

This is the day that the Lord has made,
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
-Psalm 118:24
