T-shirt Quilt
May 18, 2012 in Made by Mom
It was about this time one year ago that I shared photos and a tutorial about the T-shirt Quilt I made for my brother as a High School Graduation Gift.
Several years earlier (about 6-7 years ago), I made one for myself. It recently made its appearance on my blog in this picture (in this post):
I figured I might as well share more…
I determined the size of the quilt square by measuring the largest graphic on my collection of shirts (there were LOTS to sort through…enough to cover both sides)
I then made a template out of newspaper than I could trace and cut around for every other t-shirt graphic.
I intentionally turned the squares so that they were facing every direction so that there was on one “top” side of the quilt.
I did NOT back the squares with any sort of stabilizer, though I admit that may have been wise: some of the seams have since ripped out.
The front, back, and batting layers are held together by small string knots.
The smaller squares around the border where cut from the sleeves and/or front pocket graphic portions of the t-shirts.
The binding was cut from an assortment of grey t-shirt scraps.
My favorite thing about this blanket is its gargantuan size. It is wonderfully big and perfect for picnics!
This button can now be found on my portfolio page.

I just l❤ve this idea. This would make a great gift for my son, if I could just get all those old t-shirts from him!
This is so awesome. I’ve been collecting t-shirts from our various vacations, etc with plans to make one and you’ve inspired me to get started on it. I’d love for you link it up to my link party at http://www.doodlesandstitches.com/2012/05/fabulous-friday-link-party_25.html Thanks for sharing the cool quilt!

Fabulous job!
My son and I were just going through his t-shirts yesterday and we said we wished we had kept them all so we could make a big quilt. I absolutely love these!
I made a huge t-shirt quilt 12 years ago when my daughter went away to college. It was so big and warm.

I LOVE this! have NO idea how to sew. I would love to do this for my son’s high school graduation. He has played football, basketball and baseball every year since he was seven, and I have most of his shirts from all the years. Do people pay to have this done? How much should I expect to pay? Help!
Katie,
I do custom orders for projects like this. I am sending some specific information to you via email.

Would you send me your info also, I don’t know how to sew but would love to have a memory quilt made from my sons t-shirts. We lost him in a car accident and I would love to have a quilt to wrap around me and feel a hug from heaven.
