Here is what you need to make homemade playdoh:
Cook over medium heat, stirring pretty constantly. The texture will resemble instant mashed potatoes, but thicker (or thicker than I make instant mashed potatoes, anyway):
Poke a hole in the middle of your play-doh ball for food coloring and knead it in by hand.
Now you are ready to play!
There are plenty of varieties of homemade playdoh that ARE meant to be eaten (usually made with peanut butter and dry milk, but I’ve also heard of using a cake mix and butter)…but they contain such a high fat content that I’d feel the need to strip Josiah down before letting him play to avoid grease stains on all of his clothes.
This play-doh has the texture and pliability of commercial play-doh and it keeps really well. I’ve kept it stored in a rubbermaid container and it is as soft after a month as it was the day we made it. I expect I’ll toss it because the colors get too mixed up long before I need to do so because it dries out.
