Fingerpainting Fun!
February 14, 2010 in Mom 2 Mom
A couple of days ago, I said we would have to try finger painting with cornstarch (see here).
I thought it was wonderful! Here is a recap:
Mix 1/4 cup of cornstarch with 2 cups of cold water.
Boil.
Divide into small bowls.
Add food coloring.
Let it cool…and paint!
I used a roll of “weed paper” that we had in the garage (meant to go under the mulch in your garden or flower bed to keep the weeds from popping through). It was the perfect paint canvas as it provided a big workspace and was thicker than a normal roll of newsprint paper so it didn’t soak through. And think we could probably still use it in the garden this year…first I’ll check to make sure the cornstarch won’t damage anything. Who knows, maybe I’ll discover the next miracle use of cornstarch…garden fertilizer!
When I do it again, I will do a better job of stirring the paint as it heats. I was preoccupied with getting dinner on the table last night and just put it on the burner to boil. This worked fine, but it had a bunch of clumps in it. Do you remember “Orbits” (the drink, not the gum)? I think this may be how they made all those little floaty things as they had that texture. Makes me shudder to think I used to drink that stuff. Fun to play with gross to drink. Anyway, I decided to use blue, green, and yellow food colorings to balance out the red I used in frosting my Valentine’s cookies….
It was an accidental success: this way when all the colors got mixed up, the painting didn’t become all icky brown. How did the colors get all mixed up you ask….
The cornstarch washed away very easily. But a slight tinge of “smurf”ishness remains.
Happy Painting!

This is great! Our daycare did this last week and I was so sad that my son was napping and missed it. I need to try this with him. He’s going to be a little artist!
Great idea – my kids would love this – pinned it so I’ll remember how-to!
Gorgeous pictures! such a great idea for ‘safe’ paint for little ones!

This is ever so clever – my little one loves to eat paint, so this is something I need to try. I’d love to have you link up on our Linky Party – it focuses on crafts for and by kids. Please stop by if you have a chance
