A Dorm Room Dresser: Before and After

I painted this dresser the summer before I started college to use in my dorm room, and used it through my senior year. It started out all dark brown…with a layer of wall paper stuff that pretends to look like wood. I am not sure where it came from. 
Here is the one picture I could find of our room…but the dresser isn’t even in the picture (it would have been to the left of where I was standing).
You can see how the bright colors would have “worked” in the room…but they weren’t working for me anymore. Especially the pattern on the top.
I didn’t have need for the dresser any more and thought that my younger brother could use it for his dorm room. So one day I asked him what sort of look he would choose for his “man-cave” if he could do it any way that he wanted to…he would want a clean look like the Apple Store and husker stuff. So my mom and I painted it up for him. We lucked out with cans of both black and white paint on the “oops” shelf, and used them to mix up a few shades of gray.
I think this more “retro” paint job is a much better fit for this style of dresser than my crazy colors were.
